Miss Ellison's Literacy Support


I would like to welcome my new students to your Literacy Support Year 2013-14. I welcome parents to check in regularly on my Teacher Page. I am currently working with Grade 1 Students for Literacy Support. In my class, students receive an individually designed one-on-one lesson for 30 minutes daily.  In this lesson, they will follow this format:1. Reading 2 or 3 familiar books: Your child will read 2 to 3 familiar books that they have already had a Running Record completed on and are now familiar with this book. 2. Reading Yesterday's New Book: As your child reads the new book that they have been introduced to yesterday, a running record is taken: After the running record, work is done together to strengthen your child's reading skills.3.  Letter Work/Breaking Words Apart (BWA): This is done with magnetic letters to strengthen the letter names and letter/sound knowledge. 4.  Writing a Story: Your child and I will have a conversation about something your child is interested in. At this time,your child will write a story in their own writing book. New words that are used frequently are learned and strategies are learned for constructing new words.5.  Cut-up Story: The story that was written is put on a sentence strip which is then cut-up and reassembled by the child.  This is sent home for further practice.6.  New Book: Every day the child reads a new book that is well within his or her control.*Over the duration of the lesson series, your child will receive nightly homework consisting of several books to read and the cut-up sentence in their homework bag. Homework including BOTH reading and assembling the sentence are to be completed each night to strengthen your child's reading and writing skills. Your cooperation in ensuring homework is completed each night, is appreciated as you are paving the way to your child gaining strong literacy skills for the next grade levels. I request that the plastic bag, the texts and the cut-up sentence be returned daily and signed only AFTER homework has been completed.**If there are any questions or concerns in regards to homework, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school. I welcome parents to come and observe your child's lesson. **Please feel free to contact me and I can book a time where I will have your child in lesson. 
This is a reminder to parents of students enrolled in the Reading Recovery Program. The Reading Recovery program is provided to your students as a regularly scheduled daily program designed to provide a boost in your child’s literacy experience and learning in school. This program runs daily during the regular school schedule and runs for a total of 20 weeks. Your child is enrolled for the full 20 weeks required for the boost that they are to receive in learning to read and write at their grade level. If your child is consistently missing time, late for class or not completely nightly homework, they are not gaining the boost that they need and will not be able to complete the program successfully, which will not be helpful for their success towards Grade 2 entry. Please ensure that your child is attending school regularly, is on time and has completed homework each night. It is important that homework is done each evening (preferably not the morning before they leave for school), as continuous incomplete homework shows in their success levels daily at school. If homework is incomplete, your child will find it hard to gain reading or writing strength in new levelled books. They change levels frequently and this is very important for them to read each night and complete their sentence structure strips. Please take the time to sit and listen to your child while they read and help them as they build their sentence and re-read it to you. Welcome to all of my new group of Reading Recovery students and parents/guardians! I would just like to let you know a few things about the Reading Recovery Program! First of all: The program is designed to boost both the reading levels and performance of your child's reading level and abilities! This also includes their writing skills! It is a 30-minute intensive program, where there are two books read at first, then a third book in which a Running Record (which is a record of your child's reading, that is completed every day). Then we do a letter match, a comparison of two letters, in either the sounds or visual. Then we do what is known as Breaking Words Apart (BWA) in which I simply take a word, model it for your child by spelling, then saying the word, breaking it apart where the main sounds connect and put it back together. The child repeats this pattern and a concrete understanding of the word, spelling and chunking methods of that word is introduced. After that, your child will do their writing. They have their writing notebooks in which blank sheets of paper are used without lines, to help your child improve their writing skills without the distraction of a line. This also strengthens the hand coordination while they are writing. I then conduct a little Running Record on their story as they re-read it to me and then I write it out on a paper strip, cut it and have them re-organize it. Finally, we do the new text. It is an introduction to the new story, where I would model some difficult areas with your child and then have them begin their reading of it. This is all enveloped in a 30-minute solid structure. The program is intensive, lots of homework each night and a great deal of co-operation is required of your child as well, in order to get all their tasks completed in a full 30 minute class. It is vitally important that parents have their child do their homework each night, even on the weekend, as the program is intensive and must be followed. Your support is greatly appreciated by helping your child each night and ensuring their work is done in complete, signed and returned each day! I would just like to say congratulations to my Group #1 of the Reading Recovery Program for the completion and discontinuation of the program! It was a long daily process, with lots of work in readin gand writing involved! The four students have successfully completed their program and are continuing on their way becoming fabulous readers and writers!! YAAAY!! HIGH FIVE TO ALL!!
Hi Parents! This is just a little note to let everybody know that the final few weeks are upon us for the first group of Reading Recovery Students! Just a reminder for parents AND students how important it is to: Read! Read! Read! Whenever possible, parents, offer your children valuable reading materials! Encourage the love of books or the love of reading in general! Tips to get them reading, cereal boxes have lots of exciting print, colorful comic pages and comic books and borrowing is always free from the library at our school! I am asking the parents to please continue their children's love of reading even after their program is done, for the rest of their lives! Reading can only be great for them!! :) Also, keeping reading in mind, please be sure your child is reading their assigned work from me, and assembling their cut up sentences each night! Have your child read to you and scramble the words up in their cut up sentences for them to re-organize and re-read! They should read their sentences at least 2 to 3 times after they have been scrambled! Please sign their homework sheets AFTER their homework has been fully completed! Hi Parents and Children!  Just a little note to say that I'm so glad to see the progress the children are making! They are working hard and have did a lot of hard work from Septemeber until now! I would like to thank the Parents for attending their children's Parental Observation day! Your attention to their reading and homework is excellent! This shows up in their daily lessons and it is appreciated by myself and the children, as it reduces any stresses along their reading and writing journies!As I always stress, it is of utter importance that the children read, read and re-read!! They are building stamina, fluency and strength in both reading and writing skills! This also includes reading on weekends, even if there is no assigned homework from class, my class assigns weekend homework to build this strength that they require! A reminder to parents of students in the Reading Recovery Program: Tomorrow, Thursday, December 1, 2011 is Parent Observation Day. Your timed observation has been sent home with your child in their homework bag. Please be sure to arrive for that time. I am requesting observation only during the complete lesson and then I will bring your child back to class. After this, I am available for any discussion about their lesson after your child has been returned to class. I would like to mention at this time, how happy I am to be seeing the progress of the children who are in the Reading Recovery Program! They are coming along well in their progress, but as always, lots of reading and writing practice makes for stronger Readers and Writers! I am encouraging parents to continue listening to their children read and help them with their writing homework and building sentence skills every evening. This is true for both RR homework AND Classroom homework! All homework needs to be completed when assigned, as it ensures your child benefits from the skills they are practicing each night. Please take time to read to your child at any other times too. Listening to a parent/guardian read a book to a child is as important for the child, as is their own reading. After you have completed reading the book to them, talk about it! Having a discussion about the book, strengthens their recalling skills and allows them to familiarize themselves both with the characters in the story and the events that happen in the book! It is also one of the most wonderful ways of bonding with a child! Snuggling together and listening to a wonderful story, takes you both to another time and place, which part of building creativity within your child! Hi Parents! I would just like to send a little note to let you know that the students are coming along great! Once again, homework assigned from me, is a priority as much as their classroom homework. All tasks need completion and reading every evening is a must! The students need to gain strength in their reading skills and if they do not practice every evening, it does not help them gain this fluency and strength. I would like to thank you, Parents, for the continuing effort that you give your children, in assisting them, even taking the time to sit with them to listen to their stories! This is very important for your child to have an audience while reading. It helps them become better readers and takes away the shyness from reading to other people! I am so proud of the excellent work that the children are doing and the progress that they are making! Please be sure to have all their books read every evening this week! Hi Parents & Guardians!! :)    First of all, I would like to commend the children for their very hard work that they are doing very well! They are dedicated to working hard and doing well! I enjoy seeing the enjoyment that they have from reading their books or the work that they are doing.    Some of the books you may have noticed coming home, have been sent home, possibly several times and you may have wondered about this. As the Reading Recovery program is developed on strengthening fluency in reading, the need for children to practice "familiar and known" readings (books that they have read or re-read) is of super importance! Each child develops reading skills at different rates, but all children need to have a sense of fluency within their reading abilities to help them become stronger readers. You may have noticed the similar levels in books, possibly the same levels, this is simply to reinforce reading fluency. As well, similar words or sentence structures may come home as well. Please understand that it is simply to reinforce what they already know, make that stronger and work towards the new levels with more ease and accuracy! :)    Each day brings new surprises and my biggest joy is to see the progress that each child is making in the program! If you have any questions, please do not hesistate to contact me. Also, I try to make a little note for each parent on the child's envelope! :)     It is also very important that when homework is assigned, the books that go home with your child, must be read each night. If there are sentence structures or other pieces to be worked on, please work on these together with your child! It is important that they gain their fluency and strength in reading, by reading and doing homework!  I would also like to note that sometime soon, I will be having appointments set up with the parents of each child and you will be given a scheduled appointment to come in and observe your child "in action"! These appointments will be scheduled ahead of time so you will have plenty of prior notification! Parents Please Note!Please have your child read the two books that are provided with your child each night. These books are familiar to your child and must be read to strengthen fluency in reading. This is just a word to notify parents, in case you are wondering why your child may be bringing home "the same" books here and there, or previously read books. Parents and Students!Wishing everybody a wonderful week! Just a reminder that I will be sending homework home regularly. Please have your child complete their homework from this class just as regular class homework should be. It is imperative that your child reads at least 15 minutes per evening, and also including, doing the little tasks that are sent home with your child. Reading and these little tasks are important for their development of their reading, writing and recall skills. Reading strengthens a child's learning ability!! Parents, please note that there will be no school for students on Friday, October 21, 2011, as the staff have workshops that we will be attending.I will be sending homework home for my students. Please have your child read their book and practice their words. I will be sending homework home for the long weekend. Please ensure that their books are returned as well as their homework, on Monday, October 24, 2011. Also, if you have any unreturned library books at home, please have them returned with your child as soon as you both have finished reading them! Note to Parents: I have sent homework home beginning Friday, October 14, 2011. I appreciate your active awareness of the importance of having your child complete homework each night and to have it sent back the next day! It is imperative that your child reads at least 15 minutes per evening, to develop strength and the pure enjoyment of reading everything! I would also like to stress how important it is to not only listen to your child read (be their audience) but to also read to them as much as you both can share storytime. This not only connects the parent-child bond but increases your child's vocabulary and hearing and recording new words through listening! Who doesn't like to sit and relax and listen to a good story!! :) Thank you! Keep On Reading, Kids!! :)
